Goitre, also called 'Enlarged Thyroid' is a swelling of the Thyroid Gland that causes a lump in the front of the neck. Goitre is usually harmless, but when people experience severe swelling of the thyroid gland, this can block and narrow the trachea and lead to difficulties with swallowing and also increase their risk of breathing problems. People with Goitre tend to produce too much or too little or normal thyroid hormones. Women are comparatively at high risk of Goitre than men.
It is one of the most common thyroid disorders and the size of the goitre differs from person to person. In most cases, the swelling is small and does not cause any symptoms. Treatment is not necessary as long as the goitre isn't large and doesn’t cause symptoms.
